Ballard Woodworks is a woodworking school and professional cooperative located near downtown Seattle. The school offers a variety of classes, workshops, and independent studio time throughout the year. We have a fully equipped machine room with a separate bench room for hand work. Six students can fit comfortably and work efficiently.

Weekday Evenings from 6 until 9
The curriculum for these classes is wide open. The instructor will judge what can or can’t be done, but come with your dream project and see where it will take you! This class meets once a week for 5 weeks from 6 until 9. The weeks do not have to be consecutive. If anyone’s schedule prohibits meeting a certain week then the class is postpone until the next week.

Intro to Woodworking
Instructors: Stan Hiserman and Scott Anderson
Tuesdays, March 25th through April 29th, 6-9pm
Sunday, April 20th, 10am – 1pm
This is the course designed for people with no prior woodworking experience. Through discussion and hands on experience you will learn about the steps necessary to begin with a rough piece of wood and finish with a small table of your own design. A field trip to a local lumber supplier will be included to introduce you to the ins and outs of buying wood. The class will meet for six weekly sessions with a seventh class on a Sunday to discuss the many options for finishing your project. Scott Anderson, a professional finisher with many years of experience, will teach this Sunday class. .

Spring Term 2008

Dovetails By Hand

Saturday and Sunday, April 5th and 6th, 10am - 4pm
A weekend with just you and your hand tools creating fine joinery! What could be more satisfying. Here is your chance to learn something that is forgotten by most. The class will cover the two types of dovetails most often used, care of the tools and lots of hand cut sawdust! We can supply the tools if you do not have them. This class is designed with the beginner in mind.

Construct a Tansu: A Storage Chest in the Japanese Tradition
Instructor: Art Lockwood
Saturday and Sunday, May 3rd and 4th, 9am - 5pm
Tansu is the term used to describe a style of cabinetry popular in Japan during the Meiji period (1860-1910). Most tansu are portable storage chests, designed to utilize room in small spaces, and were used to store every-thing from kimonos to samurai swords. In this workshop, you’ll follow Sarah Susanka’s (author of Creating the Not So Big House) lead and take a step towards the process of claiming your living space as you learn to design/build a tansu with drawers, sliding doors and hinged doors. This two day course welcomes beginners and will supply all tools and wood.

Chisel and Plane Sharpening
Instructor: Steve Skonieczny
Saturday, April 26th, 9:00am-1:00pm
This intensive will cover the many different sharpening methods for the beveled edge of the chisel and plane. Also included is the instruction into the care and fine-tuning of these basic but important tools. Students will be asked to bring in their own tools so they can learn through doing.

Indoor/Outdoor Bench Workshop
Instructor: Thomas Lee
Saturday May 10th and 11th, 9am - 5pm
Come join a very small class and build a fabulous indoor/outdoor bench. Over the course of a weekend you will learn everything there is to know about bench-building--yes, all those technical secrets. Plus you'll get a quick intro into the use of power and hand tools, as well as instruction in appropriate design, how to choose the best types of materials, finishes and so on. At the end of the weekend: a bench, in time for Summer!
